Dating is an age old social activity practiced in all Western societies in which two individuals meet socially usually with the intention of each evaluating the other’s compatibility as a potential partner in a romantic relationship in the future. This process of evaluating is one of the oldest known dating protocols in all human cultures. In today’s date culture, with its focus on single person relationships dating has become a popular activity. This popularity in dating has seen the evolution of what used to be a social activity confined mainly to the courtship rituals of selected individuals into something open to anyone who feels like it and who knows how to behave in such a way that they will be accepted by the potential date.

The concept of the dating game is not a fixed one and depends on the individual experiencing it. For some the act of dating someone new can be seen as the symbolic joining of two separate and unequal social classes but for others it is more than that. It is more like an apprenticeship where you learn all about the other person while you are slowly becoming their friend. However the five stages are basically what these individuals go through when they first start dating someone new.

First, rejection. This is probably the lowest stage in the process of dating someone new. It is not surprising that this is the stage where most relationships end. This is because the lack of good communication between the two partners results in this rejection. Every relationship needs love and caring so when the one who has professed commitment cannot give love and care to the one that is in the relationship, it is likely that this relationship will not last. People make mistakes; things get overlooked and it is understandable that mistakes can happen.

Second, acceptance. This is probably the stage where many relationships begin to fail because both parties in the relationship have not yet come to terms with the fact that they are not seeing someone else. In order for a dating relationship to work out, there has to be an acceptance from both partners that there are problems in the relationship and that they need to work on them. Without this acceptance, there is no way for the relationship to progress.

Next, passion. This is the stage that many people fear as this is the stage where many begin to question whether or not the relationship that they are in is worth the effort. This is because of the lack of understanding on the difference between dating and being in a relationship. When someone asks the question is dating worth the time and effort, it is almost always answered in the negative.

Last, commitment. Finally, the commitment stage. Once both partners have accepted the difference between dating someone and being in a committed relationship, the level of commitment that each partner displays will greatly affect the success of the relationship. The level of commitment will be what determines the outcome of the relationship and its longevity.

It is important that these differences are understood when trying to understand the different stages of dating. It is also important that the relationship be approached in the most effective way possible. By communicating with each other in a mature and respectful manner, both people involved can learn what they want from the relationship. Communication is key to any successful romance and by finding the right balance between dating, being in a relationship, and commitment, romance can thrive.

Dating can be fun and exciting. The point of it all is to remember that while there are many different types of dating, they all begin with the same thing – to have fun! Remembering this can help anyone enjoy their romantic relationships and help them to grow into loving, committed relationships. Good luck in all of your romantic adventures!
