Case studies in journalism can focus on a single person or incident; case studies on architecture could focus on a building’s design and construction; and case studies on marketing could focus on the marketing strategy used by a company. There are several compelling reasons as to why researchers might use case studies to tell their stories. Case studies are often used in journalism in order to provide extensive background information about an individual or organization. For instance, a news report about a missing child would often make use of case studies. Such background information would allow the reader to form a more clear picture of the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the child.

In addition, case studies can also be used in literature. Many researchers might choose to write case studies about products or services that they feel are beneficial for the readers. For instance, a case study on the benefits of cell phones might help readers form a more accurate impression about the technology. They might also allow researchers to explore how cell phones affect people’s sense of safety, and how the phones themselves affect the psychological well-being of their users.

Case studies require a carefully selected group of individuals: they need to be adults, they need to have typical daily activities, and they need to be from a similar social setting to the researcher.
