What is case study? A case study is an detailed, in-depth examination of a specific case within an actual real-life context. For instance, case studies in medical research can focus on a specific patient or illness; case studies within the environmental science field may focus on the environmental factors that resulted in a certain disaster; and case studies within the social sciences may focus on the social factors that shaped a person’s personality. Basically, a case study brings a lot of details together in one study, creating a vivid portrait not only of the case, but also of the people who were involved in it.
In order to perform case studies properly, you will need to make some data collection steps. You need to collect all sorts of information. You may want to use interview techniques, or draw on personal knowledge from previous researches, or use databases online to gather facts and data on the case study topic. Data analysis may also be necessary, particularly if your purpose is to examine whether there is a significant statistical connection between variables. After data collection and analysis, you may want to refine your case study for publication in a peer-reviewed journal, or to turn your findings into an executive summary or white paper for submission to a conference or industry conference.
In case study research, two types of sources are often used to support your findings: first, you could use research questions and surveys about real people. These questions and surveys are usually collected by the researchers themselves (often at hospitals, schools, and companies) and submitted to databases maintained by professional organizations. The result is a database of real-life case studies. These case studies are rich in details and come with descriptive appendices. They are also frequently cited as the primary source of research materials.
In a different but parallel way, a researcher might utilize databases and other information resources owned by another organization. In this case, the researcher collaborates directly with the source or organization and produces case studies or research documents in exchange. The major difference between the two is that the latter approach allows the researcher greater latitude in deviating from the specific case studies suggested by the main source of data (the organization). There are drawbacks to using multiple case studies. First, the researcher must obtain the consent of all individuals involved in the multiple case studies.
What is this “case study research”? Well, it has been said that it is not an innovative or new way of thinking. Rather, the point is to think about a particular problem or situation in detail and then to take all the pieces of that puzzle and analyze them. It is meant to be a concise snapshot of that one case study scenario.
There are many advantages to this method. One of the biggest advantages is that it allows for the compilation of several case studies into a single comprehensive study. In this respect, all the pieces of information can be considered as true facts and can be used in several different future studies. Another advantage is that it is a relatively simple process to compile all of the pieces of information into a cohesive whole that makes sense.
There was a paper published in 2021 in the Journal of Applied Psychology that attempted to answer the question, “what is a qualitative study?” The author chose to call her piece a ” Golomb qualitative study” because she felt like there were several different types of this kind of study. However, the purpose behind the entire topic was to try to change the way in which teachers taught their students. Specifically, she was concerned that children were being taught a statistical approach to studying which didn’t make much sense. After doing some deeper investigation into the matter, the author discovered that the problems with the statistical approach stemmed from two separate things:
The first problem was that the data set which was being used in the study was being too large and therefore the results weren’t reliable. The second issue was that the method being used to gather the data was itself flawed. Because of these reasons, the paper finally came to the conclusion that what is a case study in a qualitative research question is dependent on both the research question and the design of the research.
